Just to document my position on how the online obituary is becoming a commodity - I have included the partial list of web sites in the publishing, re-publishing, condolence & tribute collection business.  In other words, my position on this subject is very well thought out and heavily documented.  I am not picking on or condemning any of these companies in any way.  Most of them offer a very nice online site for the obituary, condolences, tributes and the like.  The point is that there is a lot of potential confusion on the internet when someone wishes to leave an online condolence, memorial or tribute.

How do they know they picked the right one?  How does the family know that there may be several potential sites collecting sentiments intended for them?  Who is responsible for monitoring & delivering all of the scattered condolences and tributes intended for the grieving family?  If I owned and operated a funeral home - why would I outsource my online obituaries to a third party?  Why wouldn't I want to maximize the traffic coming to my site while protecting the family's best interest at the same time?

There are more out there and this list will apparently continue to grow.  The old saying is - "You don't know what you don't know".   Now that you know what is out there - there should be no question that you need to take some action steps.  Part 3 of this Got Funeral Blog Post series will focus on strategies to improve your Search Engine Optimization & protection for both your funeral home brand on the internet, along with the online obituaries you are publishing on behalf of the families your funeral home has the privilege to serve.
